Solidarity and thought for the inhabitants of Antalaha

METEOROLOGICAL : Cheneso scheduled to make landfall in northern Antalaha between 7am and 10am this Thursday morning.

The danger is imminent for the Sava region.

Strong tropical storm Cheneso with its 100km/h winds and 140km/h gusts is expected to make landfall in the north of the Antalaha district this Thursday between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.. According to Météo Madagascar, the center of the storm was 75km east-northeast of Sambava around 3 a.m..

Given the imminence of the danger, the Sava region, but also those of Diana and Analanjirofo, are placed on red alert. Residents of these areas are invited to exercise the greatest vigilance and the authorities advise them to stay safe at home., not to travel and to keep informed. Notices of suspension of courses are notably issued by regional authorities.

In his hurricane bulletin, Weather Madagascar reminds that “the wind gusts associated with Cheneso are likely to damage or destroy vulnerable homes and infrastructure, especially in the Sava and Analanjirofo regions”.

In regions placed on yellow alert such as those of Sofia, Eastern or Alaotra Mangoro, heavy rain is also forecast with risks of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The yellow alert for heavy rain extends to the Boeny regions, from Bethsiboka, Analamanga, of Vatovavy and Fitovinay. Rainfall is forecast to exceed 100mm/24 hours in some locations. Reduced visibility, stagnation or rising water, flash floods and landslides are the feared impacts, leading Météo Madagascar to call for vigilance.
