Staying home today so you can travel tomorrow
Covid-19 – Staying home today so you can travel tomorrow
UNWTO : Global Tourism Crisis Committee
THEWorld Tourism Organization (UNWTO) organized the 19 March 2020 a high-level virtual meeting that brought together the main United Nations agencies, Chairs of the UNWTO Executive Board and Regional Commissions and Private Sector Leaders. The watchword : “Staying home today so you can travel tomorrow”.
Tourism is the economic sector hardest hit by the Covid-19. Where, all participants accepted the UNWTO invitation to be part of the crisis committee for world tourism. This committee was established as the UNWTO plans to publish a global guide for recovery. The UNWTO-led committee will hold virtual meetings at periodic intervals. Coordinated and effective action is obviously necessary. And it must mobilize the public and private sectors, public authorities, international financial institutions and the United Nations.
In close relationship
Since the start of the pandemic, UNWTO works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO). Their objective is to guide the tourism sector in the face of the challenge of Covid-19.
The meeting was conducted from Madrid but remotely, for public health reasons. The call for international cooperation to form a common front within the framework of well-founded action was reiterated.. We talk about the most up-to-date public health recommendations. And we must take into account the depth of the economic shock wave and the social cost of the pandemic.
Never seen
“This unprecedented public health emergency is already an economic crisis that will have a social cost,” declared the UNWTO Secretary-General., Zurab Pololikashvili. He added that tourism “is the hardest hit sector. Changing reality has overtaken all our most realistic estimates.”.
In the absence of certainty as to the duration of the crisis or what the final economic and structural impact on tourism will be, all participants were deeply concerned about the millions of jobs at risk of being lost. Knowing that, in the world, the sector consists of 80 % small and medium-sized businesses, the general social impact of the crisis will go well beyond tourism and will be the major concern of the international community.
Essential coordination
Tourism has proven in the past to be a reliable partner to be on the front line of the recovery of societies and communities. However, this is only on the condition that the economic policies of governments and the support mechanisms of donor and financing organizations take into account the fact that the sector affects all sections of society..
“It is the livelihoods of millions of people and their families that are at stake, whether in urban centers or in remote areas where tourism is, sometimes, the main income-generating activity and a vector of social inclusion, protection of heritage and initiation of development” declared Mr.. Pololikashvili.
Stay at home today so you can #TravelTomorrow
The UNWTO slogan was unanimous : « Stay home today so you can travel tomorrow » (Staying home today so you can travel tomorrow). We spread it on social media with the word #VoyagerDemain.
UNWTO recommendations for recovery
UNWTO will publish, in the coming days, a set of recommendations for recovery. This document will outline a roadmap, for use by governments and other authorities, to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism sector and then accelerate the recovery.
Participants at Thursday's coordination meeting agreed that “It’s a common challenge that we can only face together ; recovery requires collective action on a scale never seen before. »
