UNWTO against general travel restrictions

UNWTO vs. general travel restrictions

UNWTO against general travel restrictions

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) protests against the imposition of general travel restrictions. C’est une institution spécialisée des Nations Unies.

Freedom of international travel

Countries from all regions of the world have expressed their solidarity for this imposition and the maintenance of the freedom of international travel..

The States of Southern Africa is one of the countries that impose this travel ban.

For Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, il condamne les interdictions de voyager imposées à son pays et à ses voisins en raison du variant Omicron.

It’s said “deeply disappointed” by this measure, which he describes as unjustified, and calls for the bans to be lifted as a matter of urgency.

The United Kingdom, l’European Union and the United States are among the countries that have also imposed its travel bans.

UNWTO takes note of recent statements by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Les déclarations concernant l’iniquité et l’inefficacité des voyages généralisés à l’égard des pays d’Afrique australe.

Restrictions inefficaces et discriminatoires

In view of recent developments, UNWTO reminded countries once again that the imposition of general travel restrictions is discriminatory, ineffective and contrary to WHO recommendations.

During the UNWTO General Assembly, Member States and partners, including voices from international organizations and the private sector, echoed who’s advice that travel restrictions should only be introduced as a last resort in order to adapt to changing circumstances.

In addition, it was pointed out that if restrictions are introduced, they must be proportionate, transparent and scientifically based. They should also only be introduced after a full assessment of what stopping international travel would mean for the most vulnerable.. Notamment les pays en développement et les personnes dont l’économie et les moyens de subsistance dépendent du tourisme.

Coordination, not discrimination

L’OMT a appelé à des approches coordonnées et fondées sur des données probantes. Ce depuis le début de la pandémie de COVID-19. Le but étant de trouver un équilibre entre les préoccupations de santé publique et le maintien intact de la raison d’être du tourisme.

In recent months, such an approach has proven to be the most effective way to move forward.

UNWTO notes that travel and vaccination levels are closely linked, as shown by the emergence of new variants favored by low levels of vaccination.

As such, l’UNWTO appelle tous les pays à agir de manière solidaire pour garantir un accès équitable aux vaccins pour tous, recognize all WHO-approved vaccines for international travel and facilitate access to patents for local vaccine production.
