Mahajanga : World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated in Mahajanga this 02 April 2024. During this celebration, several events are planned, notably the inauguration of the Manjaka center, the first educational center for autistic people in Mahajanga.

What is autism ?

Autism is not a disease, it is a handicap whose manifestations are described under the heading of developmental disorder of neurological origin. Autism primarily manifests as impaired social interactions and communication and restricted and repetitive interests. These disorders can cause inappropriate behavior in certain situations. These signs can usually be identified before the age of 3 years.

Is there treatment for people with autism?

Autism does not heal, since it is not a disease, but the troubles can be alleviated. Scientific progress we learn a little more every day about the behaviors to adopt to improve understanding and interaction with an autistic person. Today, there are strategies (especially educational, behavioral) which allow children and adults to progress, regardless of the severity of the disability.

A new area for autistic people in Mahajanga.

Teacher training (Making educational tools), training of volunteers on autism screening, an art therapy workshop for parents and various entertainment and fun games are also on the day’s program.

In the Big Island, we do not yet have exact statistics on the number of autistic people. However, committed associations work to raise awareness about autism and communicate at all levels., like Autisme Madagascar which campaigns to inform the population, train and network families and practitioners.

It should be noted that autism is not a mental illness, more Un neurodevelopmental disorder. Which is characterized in particular by dysfunctions in social interactions, communication, behaviors and activities.
