Madagascar : Continuation of the subject of the scattered islands
Madagascar : Continuation of the subject of the scattered islands
It has been several years since Madagascar wanted to recover the scattered islands. Indeed, when he took office at the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, General Richard Rakotonirina reaffirms the will of the big island to bring back into its fold the continuation of the subject of these islands.
Madagascar : Restitution of the Scattered Islands
The negotiations concerning the restitution of the scattered islands have never been abandoned by the Malagasy diplomacy. This file is still one of the priorities of the Malagasy Government.
According to General Richard Rakotonirina, the new Minister of National Defense, who is now acting in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Madagascar's position on this file has not changed.
“We are looking for the means to recover our islands” indicated the General Officer at the end of the handover between him and his predecessor., Richard Randriamandrato, in Anosy last Tuesday.
Indeed, the State is currently preparing for the second round of negotiations of the joint commission scheduled to be held soon in Paris.
Second meeting of the mixed commission devoted to the scattered islands
Currently, the Malagasy State is preparing for the second round of negotiations of the Mixed Commission.
Reminder, in November 2019, French and Malagasy representatives met in Antananarivo as part of the joint commission devoted to the Scattered Islands. The meeting ended with a common statement of disagreement. And the two parties had agreed to meet in Paris for new exchanges, without setting a specific date. The meeting has been postponed indefinitely, which did not prevent the French Government from continuing to advance its nature reserve project.
In this standoff, the initiative of Malagasy deputies is intended as a direct response to Paris, and support for the executive's efforts to have Madagascar's sovereignty recognized over these islands, more than forty years after the UN General Assembly recognized it in a non-binding resolution, en 1979.
