Madagascar is among Africa's most important exporters

En 2023, the big island had 339 million dollars in exports under Agoa. As such, Madagascar is among the largest exporters to the US market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (ago).

Value of exports to Madagascar

The value of Malagasy exports under AGOA amounts to 339 million dollars in 2023. This, according to the biennial report on the implementation of this American trade law, which was released towards the end of June this year.

Although US clothing imports under Agoa have fallen to 1,1 billion the dollars one 2023, against 1,4 billion the dollars one 2021, and Kenya, Madagascar and Lesotho were major suppliers of clothing to the United States under this law, last year according to the USTR report.

Main American imports

The top U.S. imports from sub-Saharan Africa under Agoa for last year were crude oil, motor vehicles and clothing.

The other main categories of Agoa imports in 2023 included ferroalloys, precious metals, cocoa products, various inorganic chemicals, citrus fruits. There are also certain organic chemicals, copper and related items..

Agoa allows eligible sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to the United States for more than 1 800 products, in addition to more than 5 100 products eligible under the GSP (The system of generalized tariff preferences). Although the legal authorization to benefit from the GSP (The system of generalized tariff preferences)expired on 31 December 2020, the tariff lines covered by this system remained eligible for Agoa beneficiaries, specifies the USTR (United States Trade Representative). As reported by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, 32 countries are currently eligible for AGOA benefits.
