The health situation and its socio-economic challenges in Madagascar
A political dialogue between the State and the European Union was held, yesterday – Friday 19 November 2021, in the palace of Iavoloha. The health situation and its socio-economic issues in Madagascar were among the key subjects on the program.
Avoid a third wave at all costs
Since the reopening of the borders, the country faces danger of a third wave of the coronavirus epidemic. And the State has put in place a very strict protocol for people arriving from abroad. The objective is to avoid a third wave at all costs.
This objective was affirmed by Andry Rajoelina, President of the Republic, in his opening speech to the 9th political dialogue with the European Union (UE), yesterday.
Unavoidable subject in the world for almost two years, the pandemic caused by the coronavirus and its economic and social consequences were on the menu of this new face-to-face meeting between the State and the EU delegation. In his introduction, The President of the Republic recognizes that the two waves of spread of Covid-19 have had disastrous consequences on the Malagasy economy.
Post-covid economic recovery
« Today we are working on the implementation of a vast economic recovery and social development program through a multi-sectoral emergency plan and a post-covid economic recovery plan.. (…) the State has stepped up its anticipations to cushion the economic shock of the health crisis”, declared Andry Rajoelina, facing representatives of the EU and its member states. He added that the decision to reopen the borders is one of the measures taken in this direction. A decision taken in particular, to give a breath of fresh air to the economy which relies heavily on the tourism sector, He adds.
Tourism = economic development
Mixing up the different issues of relaunching tourism for Madagascar, Giovanni Di Girolamo, ambassador of the EU delegation, concedes that this sector is an important foreign exchange earner. It is also, important to make Madagascar known around the world and thus attract potential investors. The President of the Republic affirms, the rest, that long reflections preceded the decision to reopen the borders. The objective is to protect the population from health risks.
For the State, the challenge is to breathe new life into the economy, while avoiding a third wave which is accompanied by an increased risk of an invasion of more virulent variants, du coronavirus.
Towards a suspension of flights with Mauritius
These more virulent variants of the coronavirus are currently wreaking havoc in several countries, particularly in Europe and the Indian Ocean. It is exactly, to protect yourself from the Delta variant, for example, that it was decided in the council of ministers, Wednesday, to suspend, the air connection with Mauritius.
Actually, flights between Madagascar and Mauritius, will be suspended according to a press release from the council of ministers last Wednesday. The last connection should be that of 27 November.
The alarming health situation in Mauritius would explain the State's decision to suspend flights between the two countries. Unlike those from Europe, there are not many tourists who come from Mauritius.
Vaccination
On his way, Andry Rajoelina supports, Furthermore, that vaccination against covid-19 is one of the measures taken to protect the population. He reports that currently, a little more than four hundred and six thousand Malagasy people have chosen to be vaccinated. The word choice was expressly underlined, given that the inhabitants of the Big Island were given the choice of having the anti-covid vaccine administered or not. The figure that the President communicated, is however still far from the state objectives for this year.
The State has set itself the goal of reaching one million people vaccinated before the end of this year. Through the COVAX initiative and the AVAT program, Madagascar has so far benefited from around two million doses of anti-coronavirus vaccines. Residents have the choice between three types of vaccines, l’Astrazeneca, Janssen and Sinopharm.
Anyway, Madagascar is still classified as a safe destination (Safe travels) by WTC (World Travel & Tourism Concil). And to the Coco Lodge Majunga, we are always ready to welcome you SAFELY.
