Youth and the environment

Youth is the future of Man

It's an absolute reality. Youth and the environment are the future of humanity.

If, like every year, we celebrated this 12 August World Youth Day, it is to recognize that youth is synonymous with the future.

The United Nations established this World Day to draw the attention of the international community to youth issues and celebrate the potential of young people as partners in society..

The theme chosen for this year was : "Youth's commitment to global action".

This theme seeks to highlight the commitment of young people through these three strands :

  • A commitment at the local and/or community level ;
  • A national commitment (making laws, policies and their implementation) ; and
  • A global commitment.

The UN has even set up a social media campaign. Following the hashtag #31DaysOfYouth, we can contribute to the celebration of young people throughout august. It is also an opportunity to highlight their commitment to global action.

Malagasy youth want to act for the environment

"Greenhouse gas, Global warming, combating and mitigating climate change...! These have always been concepts that lead us to turn to scientists. But that's what it's, that was before. Today, young malagasy are able to explain them and take action on them". This is the text of Madagascar Express in his article "Climate change - Young people talk about it" appeared this 15 August.

"Protected areas play an important role against climate change" confirms Mirindra Rakotoarisoa, 25 years, member of CliMates Madagascar.

"The Malagasy youth want to feel involved and empowered ! », by Billy Melkiad, 24 years, member of the Indian Ocean Climate Network and Tsy hananan-droa ny Tany.

Worldwide, we are dealing with the various problems related to climate change.

And in Madagascar, young people are beginning to become aware of this scourge.

CliMates Madagascar allows them to defend their cause

CliMates is an international think-and-action laboratory with a branch in Madagascar. It brings together volunteers, students and young professionals around climate issues.

Its objectives are to empower young people to take ownership of the concept of climate change to become responsible individuals and actors of development.

The association is particularly active in three aspects : research, Advocacy and capacity building, through simulations of climate scenarios in the form of interactive games.

Young people play an important role in the fight against climate change, not only as a major force in society from a demographic point of view, but also by the fact that it is the young people who will inherit our nation.

Protected areas play an important role against climate change. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to mitigate its adverse effects because of the pressures they are under, especially in this time of crisis.

CliMates is aware of these impacts on the economy, on the livelihoods of people who depend directly on forests and biodiversity. In this regard, the association gave, and continues to give, training on understanding climate change with local associations and structures.

Several young people from several regions have already benefited from the training and shared them, in turn with their peers. The association still wants to expand its activities and welcome young people who are motivated and ready to get involved.

What solutions are proposed ?

In terms of solutions, we need to act on all levels :

  • Promoting recycling,
  • Reducing the consumption of plastic goods,
  • Don't throw garbage anywhere,
  • Contributing to reforestation, …

These are simple things that anyone can do at home, at work and even on the street.

Institutionally, dialogues must be relaunched and strengthened in order to achieve a policy in which everyone finds themselves, highlight the multi-sectoral aspect of climate change with the effective inclusion of all stakeholders, including young people. Climate change affects everyone.

Youth and the environment : Listen these young people and let's help them !

Engaged and active, young people come together across platforms to take appropriate action.

Reversing the destructive cultural trend of the environment and setting up, at their level, Adaptation and mitigation strategies, climate change are their main goals.

Networks sponsored by larger platforms bring together youth associations as well as “Namako ny Tany” or the “Indian Ocean Climate Network” to share the know-how and carry out projects together.

Today, thanks to these platforms, young people master climate issues as well as a technician and international negotiations.

Actions and new initiatives are on the increasing. A desire to create opportunities through green development is felt, but the extension of these new initiatives is still insufficient, lack of means, and lowers the motivation of young people.

Support efforts for these youth initiatives are unfortunately insufficient. Their voices are barely heard.

Therefore, malagasy youth calls on the state to hear its plea because it wants to feel involved and empowered in this common struggle.

For your reminder, we're all at once :

  • one Hôtel★★★,
  • one Gourmet restaurant,
  • one 4x4 renter with drivers/guides
  • one Event organizer (conferences, workshops, wedding, anniversary, …).
  • and a Tour operator which organises tours on Majunga and its surroundings.

And we strongly encourage action on the environment and improving the situations of young people for sustainable development..
