The degradation of nature impacts the country's GDP

The Global Futures Report

A WWF report was released on Wednesday in partnership with Purdue University's Global Trade Analysis Project and the University of Minnesota's Natural Capital Project. The loss of nature will cost us dearly if nothing is done by 2050 because the degradation of nature impacts the country's GDP.

According to the report entitled " Global Futures », Madagascar will lose 4.2% gross domestic product by the end of 2050 if nature continues to degrade at the same rate as now. This report reveals for the first time the economic cost of nature's decline 140 country. And it identifies the countries whose economies will be hardest hit by the end of 2050.

Scientists have used scenarios that link ecosystem services to economic models to model their projections. They were based on six ecosystem services provided by the nature of the. These are : pollination, coastal protection, water resources, marine fishing and carbon storage.

According to the report, coastal erosion, the loss of species and the decline of these natural riches (forests, marine resources, …) would cost 479 billions of dollars a year globally.

Degraded nature cannot provide the same services, and will be more fragile.

Coral reefs and mangroves will no longer be able to curb coastal erosion as it should be. This will weaken coastal infrastructure, fishing and farming areas.
A more degraded nature will also be much more fragile in the face of climatic vagaries.

The degradation of nature impacts the country's GDP

For Madagascar, the decrease in current forest cover would cause the loss of 1,31% our GDP by the end of 2050.

If deforestation further reduces the area of the remaining forests, they will store less carbon. They will protect us less from the effects of climate change. They will be able to retain less soil and attract less rain ...

All of this will have an impact on insect species that pollinate flowers. There will also be some on the availability of water resources for farmers. As a result, commodity and food prices will rise. Scientists have estimated the rise in prices at the global level. For the wood, it will be at +8%, cotton +6%, oilseeds +4% and fruits and vegetables +3%.

"Global Futures" also offers solutions

Far from being simply alarmist, "Global Futures" report offers concrete and realistic solutions. Better land management to avoid destroying existing natural areas is a priority. Indeed, with sustainable management that allows natural environments to continue to provide the services we need, the whole planet would benefit ! According to the report, with a policy and actions geared towards the conservation of our resources, Malagasy forests can increase our GDP by +1,23% from here to 2050.

For Tiana Ramahaleo, WWF Conservation Director in Madagascar, "It is urgent that we preserve the remaining nature that is the pride of Madagascar. We have the opportunity 2020 to open a new chapter to green Madagascar and save our biodiversity. WWF calls for clear and sustainable commitments from all of us to preserve our biodiversity for the future generation, implementing our climate commitments and achieving our sustainable development goals for Madagascar. »
