World Tourism day

World Tourism Day #MyMadagascar #MahajangaMaVille

World Tourism day

World Tourism Day was celebrated from 1980, initiated by the’UNWTO (World Tourism Organization). This is the date of the 27 September to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO statutes in 1970.

Why a World Tourism Day ?

The main objective that UNWTO sets for itself is the awareness of the social importance of tourism, cultural, economic and even political.

In many parts of the world, Tourism tops the list of economic activities. This is with its impact on employment, the mixing of populations, openness to the world and the flow of information…

Each international day is an opportunity to inform the general public on topics related to major issues. This may concern fundamental rights, sustainable development or health. These days are an opportunity for public authorities and civil society to organize awareness-raising activities and mobilize resources.

Tourism, a key to the world sector

Over the last sixty years, Tourism has continued to grow and diversify. As a result, it is becoming one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world.

Between 1950 and 2015, Global tourist arrivals increased from 25 million to 1300 million per year. During this same period, revenues generated by the global tourism sector have soared. These revenues go from 2 US $ billion 1 260 billion. The tourism sector accounts today for 10% of GDP (Gross domestic product) global, and nearly one out of 10 jobs.

Tourism and employment : a better future for all

The role of tourism in job creation is often underestimated, although tourism generates 10 % jobs around the world and let it be included in the’Objective 8 Sustainable Development for its potential for job creation.

Nevertheless, New policies are needed to maximize tourism's opportunities to create more and better jobs, especially for women and young people. They also reflect and integrate the constant advances in technology. Also, the current mismatch between the tourism skills taught and those needed by tourism employers can be addressed.

This requires a holistic approach to the future of work in tourism, including the help of increased cooperation between all stakeholders, including the public and private sectors. It is for this reason that, in 2019, World Tourism Day is celebrated around the theme "Tourism and employment : a better future for all".
