World Tourism Day 2021
World Tourism Day 2021
Today 27 September, we celebrate World Tourism Day 2021.
For this year, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) chose the theme “Tourism for inclusive growth“.
Thus, emphasis is placed on the capacity of tourism to promote inclusive development, its role in promoting respect and the opportunities it provides to millions of people around the world.
“The value of tourism”
World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27 September. It allows us to better understand, worldwide, the social value of tourism, cultural, political and economic as well as the sector's contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
It is the time to look beyond tourism statistics to show that, behind the numbers, there are people. UNWTO invites its Member States, as well as non-members, related United Nations agencies, businesses and individuals, to celebrate the incomparable capacity of tourism to leave no one behind, as the world begins a movement to reopen and looks to the future.
The role of tourism in an inclusive recovery
Tourism has the unique ability to ensure that no one is left behind.
The sector is a recognized pillar of most, if not all, sustainable development goals, in particular the objectives 1 (no poverty), 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 10 (reduction of inequalities).
UNWTO is a specialized agency of the United Nations working for responsible and sustainable tourism. It thus guides the sector on the path to inclusive recovery and growth on a global scale.. The UNWTO ensures that all the driving forces in the sector – including the populations, the minorities, young people and all those who would risk, otherwise, to be left out – have a say in the future of the sector.
An emergency situation
Tourism continues to suffer significantly from the COVID-19 pandemic : during the first five months of this year, international tourist arrivals decreased by 95 % in certain parts of the world and, according to forecast, global GDP will suffer a loss of more than 4 000 billion dollars by the end of 2021.
This is'a major shock for developed economies ; for developing countries, it's a emergency situation.
