World Wetlands Day
Celebrating World Wetlands Day in Madagascar and around the world
Each year, World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated the 2 February, to commemorate the signing of the Wetlands Convention, the 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. For Madagascar the celebration took place yesterday, the 31 January 2020.
Conservation of Wetlands and Mangroves
Human pressures on the environment are heavy, urbanization, the expansion of urban areas, Food needs, there are many reasons, "At first glance", to push the boundaries.
Mangroves are of course essential wetlands for living in tropical areas. It's often said, mangroves protect the land and protect the sea. It protects the earth from rising waters. Mangrove regulates water and avoids coastal line modification.
In Mayotte, for example, The beach of Illoni is currently a victim of the evolution of the coastline and the rising waters due to the destruction by man of the mangroves of the Dembeni area.
The calm in the shade of mangroves allows some fish species to breed in the shelter of the sea. Juveniles also find a richer diet, Ideal conditions to grow. Mangroveprotects seagrass beds to allow this reproduction. It acts as nurseries for many species.
To date, mangrove forests border between 2/3 and 3/4 of tropical coastlines , especially in overseas departments, 700 km in Guyana for example. Reunion is the only overseas department that does not have one.
Recent studies show that since the beginning of the 80, 20% mangrove forests have disappeared either 3.6 million hectares.
The mobilization that is sought through the World Wetlands Days is therefore above all an awareness of the importance for humanity of these spaces. It is also the awareness of the actions taken to make reveal to as many people as possible what are the causes of the destruction of these areas and thus to find the keys to act differently.
Raising awareness means raising awareness and giving keys to act differently. Next week, in Mayotte, there will be a day or even a month to change the performances.
