world biodiversity day
world biodiversity day
Considering the importance of public education and awareness raising on the implementation of the Convention at all levels, the United Nations General Assembly chose the date of 22 may, anniversary of the adoption of the convention, as World Biodiversity Day (or biological diversity). [Resolution 55/201 the 20 December 2000].
Humanity and biodiversity
Despite significant progress in coverage of protected and conserved areas, the world is far from having respected its commitments regarding the quality of their management and the quantity of marine protected areas. (Read the “ Protected Planet Report 2020 »)
Certain human activities continue to reduce the number of living species. Intensive agriculture and massive spraying of phytosanitary products, intensive fishing and industrial farming, hunting of protected species, Deforestation, etc…
Yet, no one today thinks of questioning the importance of biological diversity for the present and for future generations.
Madagascar is concerned
Madagascar is one of the richest countries in biological diversity. Indeed, 5% biodiversity is located in Madagascar. Unfortunately, this unique biodiversity is always at risk of disappearing. We are still seeing continued degradation of our natural resources..
Several environmental stakeholders, led by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, unite to raise awareness of the importance of changing our attitudes towards the natural environment.
To commit
Coming into force in 1993, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been ratified so far by 196 states. This international convention aims to defend biological diversity, sustainable use of natural resources and protection of genetic resources. We would be incomplete if we omitted the absolute necessity of a fair and equitable sharing of the benefits enabled by the maintenance of biodiversity.
28 years of commitment to biological diversity
The year 2021 marks the 28th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Applied by a certain number of signatory states, it has also been undermined by many others who seem little concerned about all these questions or concerned first with their unilateral economic development.
Suffice to say that the mobilization of all is more necessary than ever …
How many species do we know in the world today? ?
Biodiversity encompasses all living animal and plant species on earth. (and in the seas). The biosphere would shelter between 5 and 30 millions of species (estimate).
We list approximately 1,7 million animal species. And we list new ones every year. Unfortunately, many species are also disappearing, often because of the irresponsible actions of human society.
Many websites are devoted to this subject and it is useful to visit the United Nations website on the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Peace with nature
“A healthy environment is a key element in achieving most 17 sustainable development objectives. We have a little more left 10 years to meet the deadline of 2030 : the world will need to step up and redouble its efforts to find better solutions to pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss to truly transform societies and economies. » UN-Environment Program.
"We can't go back in time. But we can grow trees, green our cities, revive our gardens, change our diet and clean rivers and coasts. We are the generation that can make peace with nature. »
“Let’s be active, not anxious. Let's be bold, not shy. »
