This day emphasizes natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking that can restore the planet's ecosystems.
The largest civic demonstration in the world
More than a billion people around the world now participate in Earth Day activities every year. Making it the largest civic demonstration in the world.
We are all responsible
UNESCO World Heritage belongs to all of us.
It is therefore up to each of us to restore the Earth. Not just because we care about the natural world, but also because we live there.
We all need a healthy Earth. We need it to secure our jobs, our livelihoods, our health, our survival and our happiness. A healthy planet is not an option – it's a necessity.
It is therefore essential to preserve the natural environment. The survival of humanity depends on it. Future generations rely on us for intergenerational transmission and protection.
UNESCO World Heritage Convention
The World Heritage Convention is one of the most effective international instruments to recognize the most exceptional natural places in the world, characterized by biodiversity, ecosystems, remarkable geology or natural phenomena.
The Convention has enabled the international recognition of’about 3 500 000 km2 in more than 250 sites marine and terrestrial distributed in more than 95 country. Although the UNESCO World Heritage List still has some gaps, it is currently protecting an extremely valuable sample of our natural heritage.
Natural sites provide essential habitats home to many iconic species and home to unique natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes, rare ecological processes and a exceptional biodiversity. Two-thirds of natural sites are crucial sources of water, and about half of them help prevent natural disasters such as floods or landslides. They also play a central role in the climate regulation and carbon sequestration, because the forests present in the sites of the tropical regions store, according to estimates, 5,7 billion tons of carbon, i.e. a carbon density of the forest biomass higher on average than that of the rest of the network of protected areas. Marine sites are also key to mitigating climate impacts as blue carbon ecosystems.
Millions of people are directly dependent on the countless products and services that these sites can provide. Indeed, more than 90 % listed natural sites create jobs and provide income through tourism and leisure.
earth day : Restore our Planet
Today, theUNESCO invites us to participate in Earth Day. So let's continue to help protect our irreplaceable planet Earth every day in the 194 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention.
