Halloween : A night of magic and thrills
Halloween, celebrated the 31 October, is much more than just a fancy dress party. It’s an event steeped in history, myths and rituals that arouse fascination and curiosity. Its name is derived from “All Hallow Ween” meaning “eve of the feast of all saints”. This name marks the transition to winter and evokes a deep respect for the spirit world.
Haunting Origins of Halloween
The roots of Halloween lie in ancient Celtic traditions. This in particular the Samhain festival, which celebrated the end of the harvest and the beginning of the Celtic year. The Celts believed that that evening, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead was thinning, allowing the souls of the deceased to return. Legend has it that ghosts took advantage of this opportunity to visit the living. To protect yourself from spirits, they resorted to various rituals, including wearing terrifying costumes. With the emergence of Christianity, these beliefs have become integrated into Christian celebrations, especially on All Saints’ Day, creating a rich cultural mix still visible today.
Modern customs and traditions
Today, Halloween is a vibrant holiday, where young and old indulge in captivating rituals. Children, disguised as monsters, witches or superheroes, roam the streets shouting “trick or treat !” This tradition, known as “Trick or Treat”, finds its roots in the “souling”, where the poor asked for food in exchange for prayers for souls. Decorations, with of the jack-o'-lantern illuminated, add a magical touch to October evenings. Activities like candy hunts and costume parties create a festive atmosphere, inviting everyone to participate in this celebration.
Halloween and All Saints' Day : A spiritual connection
Halloween’s proximity to All Saints’ Day highlights a deep spiritual connection. As Halloween celebrates spirits and life, All Saints' Day honors the deceased. These two celebrations, although distinct, intertwine in the same desire to remember the deceased while celebrating life. The varied traditions, offerings of flowers at meals in memory of the deceased, illustrate the cultural richness of this period. Set, they create a unique atmosphere of reflection and conviviality, mixing respect and joy.
