Cardboard slippers. This is the result of the creation and research of Mickaella Tojosoa Ratokininosy 11 Antonio Ramanantena, aged 12 years, At the time of the "Children Researchers" contest. They then won first prize in the children's category 10 to 12 years. They are the talented children rewarded.

The Madagascar Industry Union in partnership with UNICEF, and the University of Antananarivo organized a research competition for children from 47 member associations of the Civil Society Platform for Children.

This program is the first step in promoting the participation of children in achieving Sustainable Development Goals No. 9 and No. 12 respectively “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” and “Responsible Consumption and Production”.

The objective being to allow these children in vulnerable situations to flourish in the field of research but also to support children in developing prototypes in terms of technologies and innovations intended for children..

This competition “Child researchers” was organized from 13 November at the 03 December 2019. It was oriented towards research and innovation in waste recovery..

“This initiative will serve as a springboard for children to develop their creativity while becoming aware of environmental issues in their neighborhood and discovering innovative solutions in their daily lives”, explained the vice-president of the SIM.

For UNICEF, This initiative reflects SIM's commitment to implementing sustainable social responsibility towards vulnerable children and ensuring effective support so that these children can aspire to a better future..

These two candidates, Michael and Anthony, from a member association of the Civil Society Platform for Children, won first prize in the children's category 10 to 12 years in the “Children researchers” competition organized by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) supported by the Madagascar industries union.

The awards ceremony took place, the 03 December at Carlton Anosy. “We created slippers with cardboard, bottles and fabrics. Cardboard is necessary so that the slipper is light and soft to wear. The bottle is used to make it more flexible. And the fabrics are used to cover the slipper. We added some accessories to decorate it. We did it in less than a week”, explains Mickaella.

Original ideas.

These children collected cardboard boxes used to package biscuits in class, bottles that we no longer use and pieces of fabric left with the seamstresses of the free-trade companies in the association to make their slippers.

The four other children who won prizes in this competition made recycling objects such as a broom and a set of colors made of plastic for young children.. Children continue to show their talent.

Michel Saint-Lot, UNICEF representative in Madagascar even affirmed that Madagascar is a hotbed of young talents who only lack an opportunity. The country must invest in it according to him.

Admiral Hassim, president of SIM was surprised to see the results of the research.

“I am amazed at what these children have achieved. They collected bottles that we threw away, we adults, almost everywhere. We should be ashamed because children are teaching us to protect the environment. It is encouraging to see that children, the future of our country already know how to take responsibility”, said Admiral Hassim. The Madagascar industries union, as sponsor of this competition, intends to support these children.
