Land born of the separation of Africa, the Australia and the India, Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the floating world between the channel of Mozambique to the West and the Indian Ocean to the East.
Madagascar separated from Africa there are more than 120 million years. She was part of a land mass called Gondwana, and it reached its current position there is only 60 million years. This isolation explains the island houses everywhere extinct species elsewhere and others who, constraints to adapt to a new habitat, have acquired original characters. The flora and fauna have high rates of endemism.
Different types of landscape are shaping the island : at the Center, you have degraded secondary forest and savannah areas. On the West Coast, larger, warmer and drier, nine forests dominate with its tropical species (rosewood and ebony), its tamarind, its Acacia and its many varieties of baobabs. Among the shrubs and plants with small leaves or thorns, often waxed, euphorbias and the didiéracéeses imposed their scrawny silhouettes. The bush degraded become sarike. On the other hand, the East is the realm of the rainforests. The rainforest , always green, has a high forest from 25 m to 30 m to the many vines-rich strata. It is home of epiphytes, arborescent ferns and orchids. Aloft, forest of fog is enriched of mosses and lichens. Finally the mangrove, located mainly along the coastal West consists of mangroves.
The title could be "Lemuria" while knowing that these graceful primates are one iconic possibility among others in the same way as the old Takhtajania 120 million years for the flora or the massive ruiniform of Isalo so the Tsingy formed a succession of sharp limestone peaks, sculpted by the winds and waters for the geological wonders.
The Malagasy people are of Indonesian origin with blends African, Indian, Chinese and European. Before the end of the 19th century, Madagascar had its own civilization based on orality, tolerance, the mutual aid and the cult of the ancestors.
