8 billions reason to save nature WWF

8 billions reason to save nature

8 billions reason to save nature

WWF published the 10 last September the living planet report 2020. It provides irrefutable evidence of the erosion of nature, despite all the warning signs that the planet has been sending us since the first edition of the report in 1998, and even before. There are more than 8 billions reason to save nature.

Living Planet Report 2020

The Living Planet Report compiles the results of more than 125 experts and scientists on five continents. Every two years, they provide an overview of global biodiversity trends through the so-called Living Planet Index. This index analyses the abundance of nearly 21.000 populations of vertebrates (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians) in the world, spread out 4 392 species.

En 2020, scientists have found that, on average,, 68% animal populations observed in this study are in decline. This discovery is the result of observations of these animal populations between 1970 and 2016 all over the world.

Et ce n’est pas tout !

We pollute most of the oceans (by plastics, hydrocarbons, waste and other). And more than 85 % of the world's wetlands have already disappeared.

The destruction of ecosystems has led to the threat of one million species in the coming decades or even centuries. (500.000 animals and plants 500.000 Insects).

The Malagasy ecosystem is at risk

Madagascar is not left behind. July 2020, IUCN announced that 31 % all species of lemurs in Madagascar are now critically endangered, when a WWF scientific report 2019 already showed that 53% Madagascar's terrestrial protected areas are highly vulnerable to climate change.

The main reason is habitat loss due to deforestation.

How we produce and consume food and energy, as well as the blatant disregard for the environment enshrined in our current economic model, have pushed the planet's ecosystems delà̀ their limits. In Madagascar, deforestation in all its forms has destroyed 254.000 hectares of forest 2019 according to the global forest watch.

We 8 billions of reasons to respond to the SOS launched by nature. Not only to preserve the incredible biodiversity that we love and with which we have a moral duty to coexist, but also because Ignoring it puts the future at stake 8 billions of people.

Let's all act together !

The Malagasy government already has a clear vision : Reverdir Madagascar. The future of Madagascar and The Malagasy is based on the renewable natural resources that the country has.

But the state alone can't do everything. It it takes everyone to mobilize to save Nature.

The emergence of Madagascar will not happen if our natural capital is destroyed. And destroyed biodiversity must be restored to support a sustainable economy.

"Access to energy is a manifestation of a country's development and is a service provided by forests, so by nature. Access to the water we depend on for food is also threatened if nature is destroyed. And Madagascar's endemic natural resources are sources of foreign exchange for the tourism sector, which contributes a lot to the country's economy. There is no development possible without nature," says WWF's Tiana Ramahaleo.

Then, we have to end all natural resource trafficking. Similarly, we must firmly enforce the laws in force in their preventive aspects as repressive. We also need to ensure that sustainability of our protected areas and our marine resources ; this biodiversity is the "infrastructure" that supports our society and our development.

Civil society organizations, public figures, Youth and the media, all the living forces of the nation, we have to act now. Set, protect and restore nature, the foundation of a healthy Malagasy society and a prosperous economy.

8 billions reason to save nature

It's time to sign a new commitment for nature and for humanity. An engament that will allow us to reverse the curve of the loss of life from here 2030. One Commitment which will enable us to secure a future for 8 billions of people on Earth.
