Air Austral : Direct flights between Mayotte and Marseille

20 million euros for Air Austral

20 million euros for Air Austral

The state grants a loan of 20 million euros for Air Austral.

A new national aid

Air Caribbean, French Bee, Air Seychelles, Air Mauritius, Air Madagascar, etc, etc, so many airlines that are struggling to overcome the covid crisis and find themselves on the edge of the abyss. His side, Air Austral is doing well and has just obtained a loan from 20 million euros from the State.

Five months after receiving his last state aid, the Reunionese airline will benefit from new national aid in the form of a loan of 20 EUR million, according to a decree published Sunday in the Official Journal.

“The State will pay twenty million euros, under the economic and social development fund program (FDES), through Natixis, in the form of a loan for the benefit of the company Air Austral SA” details the decree.

But make no mistake, this essential boost is added to a loan guaranteed by the State (PGE) from 30 million euros announced in early April by the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, and to 120 million euros in financing for 2020, whose 80 million via state-guaranteed loans.

“vital for Reunion Island”

To justify this aid, Bercy indicates that the Reunionese fleet is “vital for the island of Reunion”. It would be difficult not to admit it at a time when the company employs more than 1 000 people.

A financial cushion is therefore provided to Air Austral. However, this will ultimately have to reimburse, because these are loans and not grants.

Cooperation project with Corsair

Still “In a context of persistent health crisis which is permanently affecting the profitability of the air sector”, the two French companies unveiled the 17 august 2021 negotiations to create a joint venture (joint-venture). This " major project " will allow according to their statement the deployment of an enhanced service offer for the benefit of passengers in the Indian Ocean, while improving the economic profitability of operations “thanks to the pooling of resources and the implementation of synergies”.

The joint venture project intends to “preserve the identity and independence of the 2 companies ». It will be submitted, before its implementation, " like it should be ", the opinion of the Staff Representative Bodies and the French Competition Authority. But it therefore took the health crisis to bring the two French companies together.. Yet, they had fallen out at the beginning 2018 following the alliance between Air Austral and Air Madagascar at the expense of Corsair on the Reunion – Madagascar axis.
