Armistice Day
Each year, France continues the tributes and commemorations on the occasion of the 11 November. But do you know why this date, history in the country, is a celebrated day ?
The 11 november is a public holiday : it celebrates the anniversary of the armistice of 11 November 1918. It is an agreement ending the fighting of the First World War, which caused almost 10 million deaths in 4 years, between 1914 and 1918.
The signatories are the defeated country, the Germany, and the allies, the winning countries, especially France, Great Britain and the United States. After a series of military defeats and the entry into the war of the United States in 1917, the German leaders understood that they had lost.
What happened during the day 11 November 1918 ?
Beginning of November 1918, the german chancellor, Max de Bade, asks for the suspension of hostilities and announces the dispatch of German plenipotentiaries to negotiate. The German delegation is received in the forest of Compiègne near Rethondes, the 8 November. In Marshal Foch's office car, the conditions of the armistice are presented.
The next day, in Germany, Emperor William II abdicates and takes refuge in the Netherlands. The Republic is proclaimed in Germany and the new government accepts the armistice conditions.
The 11 November at 5:45 a.m., we signed the armistice under the conditions requested. Hostilities were suspended the same day at 11 hours.
An armistice is a temporary suspension of fighting for the purpose of negotiating an end to hostilities.. The one we signed 11 November is for a period of 36 days. And it is renewed several times. It was not until the signing of the peace treaties at Versailles, the 28 June 1919, that the end of the war is recorded.
